PRESERVING THE LEGACY OF THE WILCOX FAMILY AND COMMUNITY PIONEERS

The West Street Cemetery is located on Atkins Street near Country Club Road. It is also known as the Wilcox Cemetery. The earliest burials were in the early 1800s.

There are 263 people laid to rest here, most of them related to the Wilcox family of Middletown, Connecticut.

Many streets and neighborhoods in the Middletown area, bear the names of the families interred here. They were local farmers and land owners, such as Loveland, Boardman, Decker, and Higby.

Of note, buried here is Horace Cornwell Wilcox, Connecticut state, senator and mayor of Meriden. He was president of Wilcox Britannia, and the Wilcox and White Organ Company. In Meriden, H.C. Wilcox Technical High School was named for him.

Off Boardman Lane in Middletown, there is another cemetery under our purview: the Old Westfield Cemetery. This one has many people related to this branch of the Wilcox family and the grave stones are from the late 1700s. The Old Westfield cemetery is also known as the Old Highland Cemetery.
